What is LYO?
In 1987, young delegates from the three ELCA merging churches came
together in Indianapolis to build on that foundation. They founded the ELCA Lutheran Youth
Organization (LYO), which began with the new church on January 1, 1988. A primary purpose
of LYO is to provide a context through which youth share in the oneness of Christ by
proclaiming through word, deed, prayer, worship, Bible study, fellowship and service the
gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord. Since its birth, the LYO has called for the full
participation of youth in the total life and mission of the church.
